Regulations
Diploma in Pastoral Care and Counselling
PRS. 1.00 Entry Qualifications
PRS.1.1 The normal requirement for admission into the Diploma programme shall be:
PRS.1.2 A Cambridge Overseas School Certificate with a minimum of a Third Class Pass with Six Subjects and an aggregate of 40 or better.
PRS.1.3 A Junior Certificate followed by two years of full-time education or training at a recognized institution, followed by two years of relevant experience.
PRS.1.4 All recommendations for admission shall be at the discretion of the department.
PRS.2.00 Duration
PRS.2.1 The normal duration of full-time study for the Diploma programme shall be two academic years.
PRS.2.2 In the first year, the programme shall consist of the compulsory courses of Year I and the Diploma courses in Pastoral Care and Counselling.
PRS.2.3 In the second year, the programme shall consist of Diploma courses in Pastoral Care and Counselling.
PRS.2.4 Additional prerequisite courses that would give a student an opportunity to transfer to other programmes may be taken.
PRS.3.00 Assessment
PRS.3.1 The Diploma in Pastoral Care and Counselling shall be assessed on the course work and practical work placement which together will constitute 50%. The remaining 50% will be constituted by the final examination.
PRS.4.00 Examination Regulations
PRS.4.1 All courses will be examined at the end of the semester. Any student who has failed to attend 75% of the class sessions or has not completed all the required course work assignments in any given course may not be granted permission to write examinations.
PRS.4.2 Proceed
In order to proceed from year one to year two, a student must not have failed Diploma courses totalling more than 12 credit hours.
PRS.4.3 Supplementary Examinations
A student who scores 50% in the continuous assessment of the course and scores at least 40% in the examination itself shall supplement that course. However, no student shall be allowed to supplement courses totalling more than 12 credit hours.
PRS.4.4 Fail, Repeat, Discontinue
A student shall:
Fail and discontinue from NUL if OWM is below 30%
Discontinue from the programme if OWM is between 30% and 44%.
Repeat the year if OWM is between 45% and 49%
PRS.5.00 Score Classification
Pass with Distinction A or B average (70% and above).
Pass with Credit C average (60-69%)
Pass D average (50-59%).
Fail F (49% and below).
PRS.6.00 Transfer to a Degree Programme
PRS.6.1 A candidate obtaining at least a Pass with Credit may apply for a transfer to a degree programme which must include Theology and Religious studies as a major. The second major may be taken from any other area in which admission is possible.
Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies
Preamble: Students majoring in Theology and Religious Studies should study carefully the Faculty of Humanities General regulations. The department’s Special regulations are only meant to supplement the Faculty General Regulations.
PRS.7.00 Admission
PRS.7.1 The normal requirements for admission shall be as stated in the University General entry regulations.
PRS.7.2 Students can read for:
a double major:
The double major in Theology and Religious Studies shall be made up of Theology and Religious Studies and any other area of Study in the Faculty of Humanities or any other faculty in which admission is possible.
a single major
Students will be admitted to a single major at the beginning of Year 2 provided they have taken and passed Theology and Religious Studies Year I courses.
PRS.8.00 Duration
PRS.8.1 The normal duration of full-time study for B.A. programme shall be three academic years after the common first year.
PRS.9.00 Research Project
PRS.9.1 In their final year Theology and Religious Studies students have to submit a research project in the form of a long essay of 8,000 - 10,000 words for double majors and 12,000 - 15,000 words for single majors.
PRS.9.2 The department must approve the research topic before students can go on with their research.
PRS.9.3 A student shall make a presentation of the project in the department seminar and this will constitute 20% of the final mark.
PRS.9.4 The project itself will constitute 80% of the final mark.
M.A. Theology and Religious Studies (Mode I and II)
PRS.13.00 Admissions
Mode I
PRS.13.1 The regulations governing eligibility for Masters Degree by Mode I are as in the General Regulations for the Masters’ Degrees in all Faculties (PG.11.00).
Mode II
PRS.13.2 The normal requirement for admission shall be an appropriate attainment of Bachelors Degree (Honours) of this University or an equivalent qualification from NUL or other universities. An OWM of 65% with all the courses passed shall be regarded as an appropriate level of attainment.
PRS. 13.3 Candidates with a high degree of attainment in a Bachelors (Honours) Degree of a cognate discipline relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of specialization may also be considered. in such an instance, a candidate may be required to register for and pass lower level courses to make up for deficiencies in Theology and Religious Studies courses.
PRS. 13.4 All recommendations for admissions shall be at the discretion of the department.
PRS.14.00 Assessment
PRS.14.1 A Masters degree by Mode I shall be evaluated by thesis.
PRS.14.2 The recommended length of mode I thesis shall be between 30,000 and 45,000 words.
PRS.14.3 A Masters degree by Mode II shall be evaluated by course work, examination and thesis.
PRS.14.4 The recommended length of mode II thesis shall be between 25,000 and 30,000 words.
PRS.14.5 The ratio of coursework to examination shall be 3:2 (60/40).
PRS.14.6 Grades obtained from lower level courses taken as prerequisites for courses at Masters level will not count towards graduation. However, candidates will be required to pass all prerequisite courses. A mark of at least 50% must be obtained for the candidate to be credited with a pass in such courses.
PRS.14.7 Candidates will be required to successfully defend the proposal for their thesis before proceeding with the thesis.
PRS.14.8 A candidate’s proposal defence shall be before a panel comprising:
a) Head of the Department or his/her delegate.
b) Candidate’s supervisor
c) A member of staff with appropriate specialization.
d) Designate of the University Post-Graduate studies committee.
PRS.14.9 The Final thesis shall be submitted to three Examiners, namely, the supervisor, internal examiner and external examiner appointed by the University with the advice of the department.
PRS.14.10 The candidate will be expected to submit and defend a thesis of between 30,000 and 45,000 words in the area of the candidate’s specialization.
PRS.14.11 Candidate’s thesis must be favourably evaluated by the external examiner before oral examination.
PRS.14.12 Candidates will be required to submit to an oral examination of their thesis before a panel consisting normally of the following:
a) A Professor of the Department or of a cognate discipline as chairperson.
b) Head of Department or his/her delegate.
c) Candidate’s supervisor
d) Member of Staff with appropriate specialization.
e) Designate of the University Postgraduate Studies Committee.
PRS.14.13 Candidate’s performance at the oral examinations shall be assessed with one of the following classifications:
a) Pass
b) Pass subject to satisfactory completion of minor corrections
c) Supplementable Fail
d) Fail
PRS.14.14 In the event of the thesis being assessed as supplementable failure and corrections are suggested, the candidate can resubmit the revised thesis within six calendar months for re-examination. in such cases the maximum assessment of Pass will be awarded.
PRS.14.15 Where the candidate’s thesis, upon re-examination is judged to be unsatisfactory, the candidate shall be discontinued from the programme.
PRS.15.00 Duration
PRS.15.1 The normal duration of full-time study for the Masters Degree shall be TWO calendar years.
PRS.15.2 Candidates with deficiencies in core Theology and Religious Studies courses may be required by the department to take their Masters degree over a period of three or four years depending on the nature of the deficiency.
PRS.15.3 Candidate may also register as part-time student for the Masters Degree and in such cases, the normal duration shall be FOUR calendar years.
PRS.15.4 Part-time students with deficiencies in core Theology and Religious Studies courses may be required to take their Masters degree over a period of six years, depending on the nature of the deficiency.
PRS.15.5 No full time programme leading to the Masters degree shall be more than four years and no part-time programme for the Masters degree shall extend beyond six years.
PRS.15.6 The offering/duration of both full-time and part-time programmes shall be subject to availability of staff.
Doctoral Degree
PRS.16.00 Admission
PRS.16.1 The normal requirement for admission shall be a Masters Degree of this University or an equivalent qualification from other universities.
PRS.16.2 Two references should be submitted, at least one of which should be from the applicant’s supervisor or head of department at Masters level. These references will be given special consideration in the case where Masters qualification is not classified.
PRS.16.3 Candidates with a Masters degree without course work but with a suitable thesis may also be considered. in such cases, what counts as a suitable thesis will be determined by the head of department on the recommendation of a specialist in the area in which the thesis was undertaken.
PRS.16.4 Candidates may be required to go through selection examination, conducted by the head of department and at least two other members of the department, to determine their suitability for the programme.
PRS.16.5 Candidates shall be required to present before the department, a written proposal in his/her area of interest as part of the application for admission.
PRS.16.6 All recommendations for admissions shall be at the discretion of the department.
PRS.17.00 Duration
PRS.17.1 The normal full-time duration for the Doctoral degree shall be three calendar years after a successful completion of the Masters degree programme.
PRS.17.2 Candidates with deficiencies in core Philosophy or Theology/ Religious Studies courses may be required to take their Doctoral degree over an extended period to allow them to make up for the deficiency. The duration of the programme in such cases shall depend on the nature of the deficiency of the candidate but must not be more than SIX calendar years.
PRS.17.3 Candidates may also register to study for the Doctoral degree on a part-time basis. in such cases, the normal duration shall be SIX years after a successful completion of the Masters degree programme with an extension of not more than FOUR additional years.
PRS.17.4 Part-time students with deficiencies in core Theology and Religious Studies courses may be required by the Programme to take their Doctoral degree over an extended period. The duration of the programme in such cases shall depend on the nature of the deficiency of the candidate but must not be more than TEN calendar years.
PRS.17.5 The offering/duration of both full-time and part-time programmes will be subject to availability of staff.
PRS.18.00 The Degree
PRS.18.1 A Doctoral degree shall be by research only and will be evaluated through seminars and a dissertation.
PRS.18.2 Candidates will be required to present four seminars in the first year of registration or sometime immediately thereafter, in four different areas of Theology and Religious Studies that are relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of specialization. The success of such a seminar shall be determined by a panel comprising:
a) Head of Department or his/her delegate.
b) Candidate’s supervisor
c) Two other members of the department.
PRS.18.3 Candidate’s PhD thesis must arise from one of these four areas and a defence of the candidate’s finalized thesis proposal shall be required before the candidate proceeds with the writing of the thesis. The date for the thesis proposal defence shall be set by the head of department in consultation with the candidate’s supervisor(s).
PRS.18.4 Candidate’s proposal defence shall be before a panel comprising:
a) A Professor from the area in which the thesis is undertaken or cognate discipline as chairperson.
b) Candidate’s supervisor(s)
c) Head of department or his/her delegate
d) Member of staff with appropriate specialization and who shall normally hold a Doctoral degree.
e) Designate of the University Postgraduate Studies Committee.
PRS.18.5 After a successful proposal defence, the candidate shall be required to present an annual report on the progress of his/her work to the department.
PRS.18.6 Candidate’s final thesis, of not less than 50,000 words, shall be examined by three examiners, at least two of whom should be external to the NUL. Examiners shall be appointed by the head of department in consultation with the University Postgraduate Studies Committee.
PRS.18.7 Following submission of the examiners’ reports, a Board comprising of the following members shall be formed to review the reports:
a) The head of the department (as Chair of the Board).
b) One member of the University Postgraduate Studies Committee specializing in the relevant field.
c) Candidate’s supervisor(s).
d) One member of staff from a cognate discipline specializing in the relevant field.
e) One member representing the wider community of knowledge (e.g. external examiner).
PRS.18.8 Candidate’s dissertation must be favourably evaluated by the external examiner prior to the oral examination.
PRS.18.9 An oral examination is obligatory for all candidates following a positive assessment of the examiners’ reports as stipulated under 18.6 above. The Board for the oral examination shall comprise those individuals cited in 18.6 above, with the addition of one of the candidate’s external examiners.
PRS.18.10 Candidate’ performance at the oral examination shall be assessed with one of the following classifications:
a) Pass
b) Pass subject to satisfactory completion of minor corrections
c) Supplementable Fail
d) Fail
PRS.18.11 In the event of the thesis being assessed as a supplementable failure and corrections are suggested, the candidate can resubmit the revised thesis within TWELVE calendar months for re-examination. in such cases the maximum assessment of Pass shall be awarded.
PRS.18.12 Where the candidate’s thesis, upon re-examination is judged to be unsatisfactory, measures to be taken shall be at the discretion of the examiners in consultation with the Board cited under 18.7.
