Regulations

FR 1.00         Students reading courses offered by the Department of French should carefully look at the Faculty of Humanities General Regulations. The Departmental Regulations are specific to programmes offered by the Department.

FR 1.01

FR 1.02         Students in the Department of French can read for:

                        (a)         A double major:

The double major should be made up of French and one of the following subjects: African Languages and Literature, Development Studies, English Language, Human Geography, History; Literature in English, Philosophy; Theology; Political and Administrative Studies, Sociology.

                        (b)        French as a teaching subject in a B.Ed. programme.

                        (c)         A Certificate in Practical French (  CPF

                        (d)        A BA French (Translation)  

FR 1.03        Assessment: core courses offered at Year 2 level constitute prerequisites for core courses in Year 3, and similarly, those in Year 3 are prerequisites for Year 4 ones. A student must therefore take and pass a core course in one year in order to be admitted into a core course in the subsequent year. Any deviation from this regulation will have to be approved by the Department.

FR 1.04       Concerning the ancillary courses in French, a course failed in one year may be repeated in the following year as an overload. However, a student will not be allowed to supplement or repeat more than two courses in any given year.

FR 1.05        No language course from Year 1 to 4 is supplementable.

FR 2.00        First Year: any student who intends to prepare for the programmes offered by the Department as indicated above is required to take F101 and F102 in the first year of study.

FR 2.01        Exemption from F101 and/or F102: Although all students who envisage a major or CPF Programme are strongly advised to take and pass F101 and F102, provision is made to exempt non-beginners from taking these courses. Those students who desire to be exempted must write and pass in Entry Test prepared by the Department. This Test is written during the first week of the Academic Year. Those students who pass the Test will be registered in Year 2 of the French Programme. The minimum pass mark for the Entry Test is 60 per cent.

FR 3.00        Double Major programme: This programme commences at the beginning of Year 2. Students are very strongly advised to take F 101 and F 102 in Year 1 if they wish to take a Double Major with French as one of the subjects. These courses serve to indicate the level of aptitude of the student in French. They must be passed at 50 per cent or better. However, the exemption regulation indicated here above still applies.

FR 4.00        The following are core courses that must be take and passed at 50 per cent or better. The core courses offered in one year constitute prerequisites for the subsequent year of study. The core/prerequisite courses are F201, F301, F305, F401, F404, F405 and F406.

                   Possible electives are any Year 2, 3 and 4 French courses not mentioned in the paragraph above, and any other courses in approved subjects.

FR 5.00        Certificate in Practical French: The Certificate in Practical French is offered to students:

1.       who are doing Major programmes outside the Department of French

2.       enrol with the University with the sole aim of pursuing the CPF programme

FR 5.01        The exemption provision described above in FR 2.01 above equally prevails in the case of the CPF, the following are the core courses that must be taken and passed at 50 per cent or better.

FR 5.02        A student who may have been exempted from Year 1 of CFP courses will be required to take, during the pursuit of the CPF, other French courses in order to build up the 24 credit hour requirement.

FR 5.03        The entrance requirement will be COSC or equivalent. If a student is exempted by the Department from taking any course in Year 1 or Year 2, that student must choose a course with an equivalent number of credit hours from the remaining French courses so that the students ends up with the required number of credit hours.

FR 5.04        No student will be allowed to take in the same year courses listed above without the express permission of the Department and Faculty.

FR 5.05        A student who may have been exempted from Year 1 CPF courses will be required to take other French courses in order to build up the programme.

FR 5.06        Although exemptions from Year 1 and/or 2 courses in French can be effected, CPF students will be required to take in their Year 1 all compulsory Year 1 courses to make a normal year’s load of a minimum of 36 credit hours.

FR 5.07        Transfer from CPF to Degree programme: There is the possibility of transferring from the CPF to a Degree programme. in order to effect this transfer a student must meet the following requirements:

1.                   minimum mark of “Pass with Credit” at CPF level

2.                   50 per cent or better in E 100

3.                   Meet the Mathematics and Statistics.

4.                   A student must not be out of studies for a period of more than two years. After an absence of one or two years, a certificate to the effect that the student has been in more or less constant contact with the French language is required and an Entry Test to test French language proficiency set by the Department will have to be passed.

FR 5.08         A student who has completed a three-year post-O Level Certificate or Diploma programme of which French has been one of the constituent subjects may be eligible for admission to Year 2 of the Degree programme in French. The department will administer an Entry Test whose pass mark will be 60 per cent or better.
