Regulations

1.          The Department offers Political Science and Public Administration degrees in a single and double major programme combinations as shown below:

(a)         BA (Public Administration) 

(b)        BA (Political Science) 

(c)         BA (Political Science and Public Admin) 

            (d)        BA (Political Science and Sociology) 

            (e)         BA (Political Science and Demography) 

            (f)         BA (Public Admin. and Development Studies) 

            (g)        BA (Public Admin. and Sociology) 

            (h)        BA (Public Admin. and Demography) 

(i)                   BA (Public Admin. and Human Geography)

 

2.          Departmental Regulations

2.1        Faculty of Social Sciences regulations governing supplementary examinations, repeat of failed courses, repeat of failed years, discontinuation and/or exclusion from the Faculty and/or university will be applicable to both single and double major students in the department. This also applies to continuous assessment/examination weighting, timing of university examinations, submission of research projects as well as degree award classification.

2.2        The department reserves the right to offer or not offer an optional course during a particular academic year.

2.3        With the exception of first and second year courses admission to any of the course offered by the department is contingent upon students having done Introduction to Political Science, Introduction to Public administration, Development Administration, Organisation theory and Political Development.

2.4        All students studying for a degree in either Political Science or Public Administration regardless of whether it is studied as a single or a double major programme, are required to submit a research project.

Year 1 students intending to study for any of the programmes run by the Department must take and pass all the compulsory subjects and at least 2 optional subjects listed below before proceeding to Year II.

PA263-3                       Political Systems

EC263-3                       Basic Macro-Economics

Any FSS approved second year courses consisting of 3 credit hours per week per semester for a total of at least 21 Credit Hours

Average number of credit hours per week per semester:                     18

Year III

Students must take and pass all the following prescribed courses before proceeding to Year IV.

PA362-6                       Organisation Theory                              

PA363-3                       Social Science Research                          

PA360-3                       Management of Human Resources         

PS361-3                        Political Development                           

Sociology students are exempt from PA363

Two Year three PA/PS approved courses consisting of 3 credit hours per week per semester for a total of 12 credit hours

Year IV

Students must take and pass all the following prescribed and courses before they can graduate.
