Regulations
UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY DEGREE REGULATIONS:
BIO 1.00 Three types of degree may be offered depending on staffing situation: Biotechnology, Single major (Biology) and Double Major (Biology and Chemistry or Biology and Geography).
BIO 2.01 Students who wish to major in Biology must complete the first year programme and obtain at least pass grades (minimum grade D) in Biology and Chemistry. They must also obtain a minimum grade E in Mathematics.
BIO 3.01 During year 2 all Biology Majors should take B204, B213, B214 and B224 and another major Subject. They may be allowed to take optional courses from other departments to a maximum of 6 credit hours.
BIO 3.02 All prescribed second year courses except B213 are pre-requisites to third year courses.
BIO 3.03 The approved optional courses include ST2481, P260 and CS2301.
BIO 4.00 The prescribed courses in Biology for Double Majors in the third year are: B314, B324, B334, B344 and B354.
BIO 4.01 The minimum requirement for a double major to proceed from year III to year IV is a pass with minimum grade D in B314 and each of either B324 and B334 or B344 and B354.
In year IV, 20 c.h. equivalent courses have to be taken from the courses offered.
BIO 4.02 The single subject programme starts in the third year. The requirement to get into the programme include (a) an average of at least Grade C in year II Biology courses and (b) a pass (Grade D and above) in C234 (Organic Chemistry).
BIO 4.03 The courses to be taken and passed with a minimum grade D in the third year by the single subject majors are B304, B314, B324, B334, B344, B354, B364, B374 (or equivalent Statistics Course) and C334 (3rd year Organic Chemistry).
BIO 4.04 The courses to be taken in the fourth year by Single subject majors are: B434 (project) plus 32 c.h. equivalent from the courses offered.
BIO 5.00 The FOST regulations governing pass, fail repeat/discontinue and supplementaries will be applicable to both single and double major students.
BIO 5.01 In year IV, a double major student must obtain minimum grade D in at least three Biology courses (i.e. 12 c.h.) to graduate. Single subject majors must obtain minimum grade D in B434 (project) and at least 6 other Biology courses (24 c.h. equivalent) to graduate.
BIO 6.00 The Department reserves the right to offer or not to offer optional courses in any particular year.
UNDERGRADUATE BIOTECHNOLOGY DEGREE REGULATIONS
BT 1.00 The Biotechnology programme starts in the third year.
BT 2.00 Entry Requirements
BT 2.01 The normal entry into B.Sc. Biotechnology will be a successful completion of B.Sc. Part I in the subject combination of Biology and Chemistry. However, due to the limited number of places in the programme, admission will be based on merit.
BT 3.00 Years III, IV and V
BT 3.01 All third year BT courses are prerequisites to fourth year courses.
BT 3.02 The minimum requirement to proceed from year IV to year V is a pass with at least grade D in 28 c.h. equivalent of Biology/Biotechnology courses. BT 3.03 To pass the Biotechnology programme, a student must successfully complete the Year V professional attachment or special project under supervision (BT 5018) with a Pass Grade. BT 4.00 The FOST regulations (and the modifications thereof) regarding pass, proceed, repeat, F grade and supplementaries will be applicable. BT 4.01 The overall degree classification will be based on the student’s performance in Year III and IV.
BIO 7.00 Programme DurationGRADUATE DEGREE REGULATIONS
B.Sc. Honours Programme In Conservation And Environmental Ecology
BIO 7.01 The programme is of one-year duration combining course work and a research project.
BIO 8.00 Entrance Requirements
BIO 8.01 The programme is for applicants who have obtained a B.Sc. degree with a minimum 2(ii) and an average of at least C grade in Biology.
BIO 9.00 Course Composition
BIO 9.01 1. Students will be expected to take a minimum of 36 credit hours.
2. The project work comprising 6 credit hours will be compulsory.
3. All prescribed courses should be taken and passed with a minimum of a D grade.
4. Students may be required to take a maximum of 8 credit hours of 4th year courses in Biology, which they did not take in their B.Sc. These are in addition to the prescribed honours courses and the grades obtained will not be used in assessing the degree classification.
BIO 10.00 Assessment BIO 10.01 The assessment of the courses will be based on course work (which will include tests, practical reports, seminars and assignments) and written final examinations. The assessment of the project will include a departmental oral presentation.
