EDF111-6         Introduction to the Foundation of Education

The meaning and functions of education; types of education. Theories in education and their relevance within the developing environment. The contextual consideration in education. Education in Lesotho: a historical overview.

The school and its role in society; home and school as agents of socialization. Culture as the content of socialization and education. Social stratification and education. The school system tasks in relation to other educative agencies in society. The changing society and education; gender in/and education. Youth and the labour force.

Critical study of the work of some past and contemporary educational thinkers. A critical overview of some colonial influence and impact on the practice of education in some contemporary systems in Africa.

EDF222-6        Teaching and Instructional Technology

Educational goals and objectives. Logical Instructional Model. Pre-assessment, Methods of Teaching and factors determining their selection, Evaluation.

Types and functions of instructional media. Production and operation of teaching materials and media. Classroom presentation and communication skills. Classroom management. How to use scheme and record books. Unit and Lesson planning.

EDF223-6        Educational Psychology/Guidance and Counselling

Introduction to Educational Psychology and psychology, Learning Theories, Adolescence, Motivation, Deviant Behaviours, Intelligence, Personality and Attention and Memory.

Definition of school guidance; essential features, principles and aims; school guidance teacher, task, personal qualities; school guidance and parent; guidance and counselling; guidance-counselling and the person of a teacher, of a primary school student, of a secondary school student, of a high school student, of a college student/University student; careers education and guidance counselling.

EDF402-3        Non-formal Education

The concept of non-formal education, theoretical thrusts/arguments underlying non-formal education, historical development, nature of provision and the providing agencies. Gender and provision of and participation in non-formal education. Financing and non-formal education policy. Planning, implementation and evaluation in non-formal education.

EDF404-3        Testing and Evaluation

Taxonomy of educational objectives. Teaching styles and instructional decision-making related to learning outcomes, feedback processes in the classroom. Formative and summative evaluation of learning. Assessment procedures, Test construction,. Validity and reliability of instruments. School examinations specifications and results analysis and interpretation.

EDF431-3        Educational Administration

General theory of administration; administrative leadership. Communication as a tool of school administration. School records and discipline. Theory of the school curriculum, and its application. ‘School administration in the light of curriculum. The structure of education in Lesotho.

EDF441-3        A Clinical Supervision

The role of clinical supervision in the enrichment of classroom instruction. Systematic evaluation of instruction. Diagnostic techniques in the classroom. Design of a wide variety of in-service and staff development programmes. Classroom visits.

EDF442-3        Analysis of Supervisory Behaviour

Inputs into the supervisory conference; analysis of the roles of the student teacher, the supervisor, and the cooperating teacher in relation to the environment and the learning experience provided. Process: study and analysis of supervisory behaviour. Outcomes of the conference: self-concept, attitudes, perceptions, teaching behaviours, skills and techniques.
